Goodbye Bafana

1. In general, what did you like and dislike about the film?
In general terms, I didn't like the film. The protagonist was portrayed as the typical white man that's against the system but does nothing about it, since he has privileges that the other people don't, and taking action would mean to give up his benefits too. I did like how the context was presented, specially at the beginning of the movie, but the character development was weak. Gregory always seemed as a good guy who didn't like the idea of racism and segregation, he was never "in favour of" that racism, though he was an officer. On the other hand, his wife development from racist to pro Mandela was too abrupt. It lacked authenticity.

2. Who was the character you liked the most and the character you liked the least in the film? Why?
I didn't like any character. Mandela was way too idealized, we couldn't see his fragility like in The Long Walk to Freedom. Too perfect. On the other hand, Gregory was shown as a full antihero, regretful over his bad decisions, trying to replay his sins by becoming caring and attentive with Mandela, but always keeping his "amarillismo", because in the end he wasn't either part of the government nor part of the liberation movement. Everyone else, wifes, children and friends, were too cliché and bland.

3. How do the versions of James Gregory, Nelson Mandela, and Winnie Mandela compare between  Goodbye Bafana and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom?
We couldn't see anything solid about Winnie in this film. She just fulfilled the wife role. They missed her revolutionary and strong self shown in The Long Walk.
Mandela was the same. In this movie, he was a hero, worshipped by everyone. We witnessed black and whites, but never the greys that The Long Walk showed; his fragility and introspection over the violence in the movement.
Gregory, in the Long Walk, was a racist officer that slowly became Mandela's friend. But the movie never showed the intimicy they developed in Goodbye Bafana. Since he was the protagonist, everything was about him or going around him. Still, I think his character development in Goodbye Bafana was weak and he tried to make the people to pity him. He was always suffering and facing the downside of being friendly with Mandela (for example, the chocolate scene.

Sorry if I'm to pessimistic.
